HISTORY: The city of Portland, also known as “The Rose City” and “City of Bridges”, was founded in 1843. Its name was determined by a coin toss now known as the “Portland Penny”. Attracted by tales of its immense natural beauty, the Oregon Trail migrations began from all over the U.S., and Portland expanded into the second largest city in the Northwest. Early settlers made their living selling fish and timber, both of which are plentiful in Portland and the surrounding areas. In fact, so much logging took place during the time of Portland’s founding that the city also became known as “Stumptown” (now the name of the famous Portland-based coffee franchise). As Portland developed into a metropolitan city, community leaders carefully controlled its growth and ensured the integration of trees, parks and environmental protection.
CULTURE: Since the dot-com boom in the 1990s, Portland has attracted creative people from all over the world in the computer industry, athletic apparel field and beyond. Portland is known for its progressive culture and is a hub for artists and musicians. Home to the world’s largest independent bookstore, Powell’s Books, Portland also has a population of avid readers and writers. Portland, which has always been known for its micro-breweries and coffee culture, has recently produced an innovative and burgeoning restaurant scene, partly due to its proximity to local and organic farmers. Home to abundant coffee shops, bookstores, bars, clothing boutiques and street festivals, Portland’s culture reflects its population of independent thinkers and entrepreneurs.
LANDSCAPE: Situated at the confluence of the Willamette and the Columbia rivers, with Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood majestically towering across the skyline, Portland is a truly picturesque Northwest city. Portland is home to numerous gardens, parks and hiking trails, even within the city limits. Today, Portland is one of the few cities in the world which seamlessly combines nature and city life. It has recently been labeled the most environmentally friendly city in America.
