HISTORY: The community of Lake Oswego is based on a rich history. The area was foremost inhabited by the Clackamas Indian tribe until it was founded by European settlers in 1847. In the late 1800s, the town boomed when iron ore was discovered. Lake Oswego was once a remote area of Oregon, approachable only by dirt roads and river boats, but soon became a Northwest destination. After the decline of the iron industry, city planners of Lake Oswego turned their attention towards residential development. Today, Lake Oswego is still known for its family-friendly neighborhoods, scenic setting and desirable real estate.

CULTURE: The residents of Lake Oswego are devoted to preserving a culture dedicated to entertainment, education and the outdoors. Lake Oswego support for the arts includes organizations such as The Lakewood Center for the Arts, Lake Oswego Foundation for the Arts and programs such as Festival of the Arts and the Arts Literacy Program. The town is also a mere eight miles from downtown Portland, an easy journey to experience further culture and nightlife. However, much of Lake Oswego culture is centered on nature, the outdoors and recreational activities such as water sports, golf and tennis.

With its clean air and abundant, green outdoor spaces, Oswego is a highly-desired destination for many Oregonians who wish to escape the bustle of city life.
